The Destiny Dozen aka The Shitty Gritty
May 19th 2024 | 8am-4pm
Get ready to challenge yourself with
a tour of Tacoma's toughest hills
The Destiny Dozen is a fundraiser for Second Cycle that will take you
roughly 40 miles around Tacoma, going up 13 of our toughest hills
from Fairbanks to Owen Beach, climbing 4200 feet.
What is the Destiny Dozen?
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure at the Destiny Dozen Fundraiser Ride! Spanning 41 miles and tackling a dozen of Tacoma's toughest hills, this ride promises thrills, challenges, and plenty of camaraderie.
As we climb 4200 feet, expect to experience a rollercoaster of emotions. From laughter to the occasional tear, and perhaps a moment of questioning our sanity, every pedal stroke will be worth it. Together, we'll forge bonds, build community, and most importantly, raise funds for Tacoma's only non-profit community bike shop. Your support ensures we can continue offering vital programs and services to our community.
New this year is the View Only option, offering a unique perspective for participants who prefer a more leisurely experience or want to cheer on fellow riders. This scenic tour spans the first 10 hills of our main route, providing breathtaking views and opportunities to support our cyclists as they conquer the ascent. Additionally, it serves as a safety net for those who may need assistance or decide not to complete the full journey after reaching the hilltops. Our Sag Wagon will be on standby to provide support whenever needed.
But that's not all! For those eager to test their mettle, we're excited to announce the return of the original race format. Inspired by the Pittsburgh Dirty Dozen, this format challenges riders to race up the hills and vie for the title of hill champion. It's an exhilarating opportunity to push your limits and revel in the thrill of competition.
Join us on this epic ride and be part of a tradition that dates back to 2016 here in Tacoma. Experience the excitement, the camaraderie, and the sense of accomplishment as we come together for a great cause. Don't miss out on this opportunity to be part of something truly special.

The Ride
Get ready for an exhilarating journey as we tackle Tacoma's toughest hills at the Destiny Dozen Fundraiser Ride! This year, we've handpicked 13 of the city's most challenging inclines to test your mettle and raise funds for a great cause.
Here's how the ride will work: We'll split into two groups to accommodate different paces and preferences. The first group, our "Fun Group," will maintain a neutral pace of 10-14 MPH between hills, ensuring a no-drop ride experience. Together, we'll tackle each hill, aiming to conquer them without losing elevation or putting a foot down. While a couple of hills may require brief stops for traffic safety, the focus is on reaching the top together. Only two of the 13 hills will have this exception; the remainder will be raced from the moment the whistle blows until the summit.
For those seeking a faster-paced challenge, join our "Fast Group." Riding at a brisk 16-18 MPH between hills, this group will follow the same rules and spirit of camaraderie as the Fun Group, with the added thrill of pushing the pace.
Throughout the ride, we'll keep track of each rider's successful hill climbs, celebrating achievements and fostering a supportive atmosphere. Whether you're racing against the clock or enjoying the journey with fellow cyclists, every pedal stroke contributes to our shared goal of supporting Tacoma's only non-profit community bike shop.
Join us for an unforgettable day of cycling, community, and fundraising. Are you up for the challenge? See you at the starting line!
