What's an Alley Cat?
Alley Cats are a unique style of race inspired by bike messengers. At the start of the race, participants get a list of checkpoints and must navigate their way to them, completing fun and often quirky challenges at each stop. The routes and strategies are up to you—whether you’re in it to win it or just for the adventure, there’s something for everyone.
Why the "Shitty Gritty"?
The Shitty Gritty was born as an extension of our original Destiny Dozen Hills race, which has now moved to May to allow for sunnier skies and fewer chills, and is therefore less shitty 💩. In contrast, the Shitty Gritty embraces the unpredictable end-of-winter weather and the grittier side of Tacoma. This ride highlights some of the city’s less polished areas and its hidden gems, all while raising awareness of Tacoma’s cycling challenges, including infrastructure gaps.
How does it work?
-
Choose your own adventure: With six checkpoints spread across the city, you decide your journey. Visit as many or as few checkpoints as you’d like—there’s no pressure to hit them all.
-
Option for hardcore riders: Tackle all six checkpoints for a ride of over 40 miles! You’ll have about 4 hours to complete your route, so plan your strategy carefully.
-
Prizes and fun for everyone: Prizes will be awarded in various categories (to be announced two weeks prior to the event), so whether you’re the fastest, the most creative, or the most determined, there’s a chance to take home something sweet.
-
Safety first: To help you navigate Tacoma’s challenges, we’ll provide suggested routes and send all participants a map with recommended paths 30 minutes after the start of the race.
Why participate?
This event is all about community, exploration, and advocacy. It’s a fun way to come together as cyclists, embrace Tacoma’s quirks, and demonstrate the need for safer, more inclusive bike infrastructure. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a beginner, the Shitty Gritty is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all.
Mark your calendars and gear up for an unforgettable ride!
