What the Heck Is the Shitty Gritty? A Tacoma Alley Cat Adventure
I’ve been getting a lot of questions (and some curious looks) about the Shitty Gritty Alley Cat lately—so let me break it down for you. This isn’t your typical bike ride. It’s gritty, it’s unpredictable, and it’s packed with fun, challenge, and a whole lot of Tacoma flavor.
What’s the Deal with the Shitty Gritty?
The Shitty Gritty Alley Cat is happening on March 1st, 2025, and it’s not your run-of-the-mill bike race. Think of it as part scavenger hunt, part navigational challenge, and part adventure—all on two wheels. Inspired by the culture of bike messengers, this event will have you navigating Tacoma, checking off hidden spots, and completing quirky challenges along the way.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about embracing Tacoma’s grit, exploring its lesser-seen corners, and showcasing both its charms and its cycling challenges. Rain or shine (and let’s be real, probably rain), this event is your chance to dive into the fun, messy side of urban cycling.
Why “Shitty Gritty”?
Our Shitty Gritty celebrates the unpredictable beauty of Tacoma—potholes, rain, and all. It’s a spin-off of our Destiny Dozen Hills ride, which has moved to sunnier skies in May. This one, though? It leans into the end-of-winter grit, focusing on the imperfect, under-loved spots of our city while raising awareness about the need for better bike infrastructure.
How It Works:
• Choose Your Challenge: Whether you hit one checkpoint or all six (over 40 miles total!), it’s up to you. This is a “choose your own adventure” ride.
• Race or Stroll: Go for glory or take your time—it’s your race, your way.
• Prizes for All Types: From the fastest rider to the most creative route, we’ve got prizes for all kinds of riders.
And don’t worry—after the race begins, we’ll send you a map with recommended paths to help you navigate Tacoma safely.
Why Should You Join?
This event is more than just a ride. It’s about community, advocacy, and fun. It’s a chance to connect with other riders, explore the city, and show that Tacoma deserves safer, more inclusive cycling infrastructure. Plus, all proceeds go toward 2nd Cycle’s mission to support cyclists in need.
Details You Need to Know:
• Date: March 1st, 2025
• Cost: $10 suggested donation (no one will be turned away for lack of funds)
